How to create a ringed stinger hook rig.....

Short strikes occur all the time, by adding a stinger hook to your lures you will eliminate the short strikes and help to put more fish in the boat. Stinger hooks are created by attaching a short section of Dacron, Kevlar or Spectra braided material to a hook which creates a loop that is a lure. Stinger hooks can be added to almost all. By adding a stinger hook to the eye of the jig you can catch more of those short strike bites. J style hooks are traditionally used for stinger hooks but most hooks can be used if matched to the lure they are to be used on. Below is how I create a stinger hook rig, I used an 8/0 hook for illustration but the steps are the same for all sizes of hooks.

Step 1: Begin by assembling the needed tools. To create this stinger hook rig we are using:

	Eagle Claw L1182 hooks in 8/0
	500-pound Spectra and Kevlar braid material (from Western Filament)
	Solid rings
	335-pound Wolverine Triple ring split rings
	Donnmar cutting pliers
	Big iron jigs
	Super Glue
	Heat shrink tubing
	30 of 7Strand #4 single strand wire folder to create a wire loop

Step 2: Cut a 12 strand of the Spectra or Kevlar braid material (I am using the Kevlar material because it is yellow and shows up better in the photos) and mark the middle of the length. Thread the #4 wire loop through the center of the braid material and exit at the center mark of the braid material.

Step 3: Thread a single ring onto the opposite end of the braided material.

Step 4: Insert the end of the braid material into the #4 wire loop.

Step 5: Pull the end back through the braided material itself creating a single strand that has a solid ring on the end. Add a couple of drops of Crazy glue at the point where the braid material is inserted inside itself and at the middle point of the braid loop material.

Step 6: If the hook eye is large enough, insert the braided loop through the eye of the hook from the hook point side out the back of the hook. If not, continue just as if it did go through the hook eye.

Step 7: While holding the end of the braid material, go around the hook shank once. Leave the loop open and free with plenty of room.

Step 8: While holding the end of the braid material, go around the hook shank again. This is two wraps around the hook shank. Leave the loops open and free.

Step 9: Insert end of the braid material under the two loops that you formed around the hook shank.

Step 10: Use pliers to tighten the Double Overhand knot onto the hook shank and slide the knot up against the hook eye.

Step 11: Add a liberal amount of Crazy Glue (Follow all safety instructions provided by the manufacturer and ensure that you are in a well ventilated area) to the Double Overhand knot this will seal it and lock it in place. Allow the Crazy Glue to dry thoroughly. Cut a section of heat shrink tubing that will cover the Double Overhand knot and at least that same length beyond the hook eye. Using a low heat source heat the heat shrink tubing until it no longer shrinks. ** Follow all safety instructions provided by the manufacturer and ensure that you are in a well ventilated area. ** Your stinger hook is now complete. Here are some examples of the stinger hook using Sampo swivel, solid ring and a standard stinger rig (from top to bottom).

Step 12: Use the Wolverine Triple Ring split ring and attach the stinger rig to the front eye of the jig. Here is a big iron jig with a stinger hook attached. This is a large jig for large fish but the steps are the same no matter how big the lure is.
