Tie your rigs at home, not on the boat.....

Pre snelled rigHow many times have you struggled while replacing a snelled hook rig? I did for a while, then I realized I could pre-tie these at home and save me some time and headaches. The basic rig consist of a length of monofilament snelled to an up-eye or down-eye hook. The rig at the right is a 24" piece of 25 pound test Silver Thread attached to a 4/0 Eagle Claw L2222 circle hook.

At night while I am spending "quality time" with the Queen I sit down and tie these. Sound funny? I bet it is much easier to tie these on the couch than it is on the bow of a boat in three foot seas. There is a picture of the snell knot on my knots page.

Pre Snelled packetOnce I have a couple dozen of these tied I hold the hooks and I trim the free ends so they are all the same size. Then I make loops around my hand with the loose ends and wrap the slack around the coils. This way I can unwrap the coils and pull out a pre-snelled rig. I then place the coiled hook bundle into a zip lock bag with the leader weight printed on the outside. This way I can easily identify what hooks they are and theSnelled hook packets weight of the leader.

I pre-tie these at home and it saves me a ton of time when I need to rig a leader. Tie these in a variety of sizes and leader lengths (just remember to write it on the bag so you will know what you got). It takes some time but will pay for itself in the long run. Give it a try!!!
